Adoption isn’t what you see in the movies — and that’s a good thing. Adoption is very different in real life, compared to what is portrayed as in the media. It's okay to not understand every detail of adoption, that's what this guide is for!~
Myth 1 : Adoption is a last resort
The truth is, adoption is a thoughtful, and intentional way to build a family. Adoption is a beautiful way for families facing infertility, health issues, or for people who are unable to carry a child to build a family. This myth is harmful as it minimizes the strength of adoptive families, and reduces the value of adoption itself.
Myth 2 : All adopted children have issues.
The truth is, every child has their own unique needs, whether they have been adopted, or are with their family of origin. Any child can experience some form of trauma, and because of the things that an adopted child has faced, they become resilient. These children are just as capable of thriving in a loving, stable home as any other child.
Myth 3 : I have to be rich and married to adopt.
The truth is, you only need a stable and loving environment, and a willingness to show up to adopt a child. You don't need a mansion, or a spouse.
As long as you are over 21 years old, you have a stable income, and you are able to pass all background checks, home safety and other agency requirements, you are able to adopt a child!
Myth 4 : I could never love a child that isn't mine.
The truth is, love is more than blood. Love is grown through care, trust, and time. And with time, even an adopted child will feel like your own.
Myth 5: Birth parents can come back and take the child.
The truth is, once adoption is finalized, it is legally permanent. When a child is in foster care, the goal is for a child to be reunited with their family of origin. When it is determined that a child can not be reunited with their family or origin, at that point a child is placed for adoption and in most cases their foster family or kinship care provider is the first in line to become their adopted parents. At this point, adoption would be finalized and they would be the family of origin to take that child.
Myth 6 : Adoption is too expensive.
The truth is, as long as you are financially stable, you can afford to adopt a child. The foster care system is low cost and even free at times. In most scenarios, these monetary needs are provided for by our agency on a case-by-case basis.
If you have any questions about foster care or adoption, please don't hesitate to reach out and ask questions, or to attend one of the Lifespan Family Services' information sessions either in-person or virtually. Lifespan will be there for any of your placement, or post permanency needs.
It's okay to be nervous, unsure, or even curious! That's how your journey into adoption begins.
